Work and relocation
Where to Live If You Work in Hartford, New Haven or Groton
Employer-led relocation: the towns people consider near Connecticut's three big in-state job hubs, with sourced prices, tax rates and transit links.
The short answer
For Hartford jobs, West Hartford (U.S. News' top place in Connecticut for 2026 to 2027, 18.7-minute average commute), Glastonbury and Simsbury are common choices. For Yale and Yale New Haven Health, look at New Haven's neighborhoods, Milford, Branford, Guilford and Madison. For Electric Boat in Groton, Groton and the towns around New London. Compare 2025 prices and FY2027 tax rates below.
Most writing about moving to Connecticut assumes you will commute to New York. Plenty of people move here for a job in the state instead. This guide covers the three biggest in-state hubs and the towns people consider near each. Prices are 2025 SmartMLS medians; tax rates are FY2027 rates from CT OPM.
Hartford: insurers, hospitals and state government
Hartford is home to insurers such as The Hartford and Travelers, along with Aetna, hospital systems and state government1. The region is car-oriented, with CTtransit and CTfastrak buses and the Hartford Line rail service along the I-91 corridor2.
Where people live: West Hartford is the best-known choice. U.S. News ranks it first in Connecticut for 2026 to 2027 and reports an average commute of 18.7 minutes3. Glastonbury and Simsbury are part of our phase 2 coverage.

Hartford-area mill rates are high, so property tax is a large share of the monthly cost even where prices are moderate. Ask about the foundation when buying older homes in the region; see buying a home in Connecticut.
New Haven: Yale and Yale New Haven Health
Yale University and Yale New Haven Health anchor New Haven’s economy. The health system reported 31,115 employees system-wide in FY20244. Union Station connects Metro-North, the Hartford Line and Shore Line East5.
Where people live: New Haven itself, plus Milford to the west on Metro-North and Guilford and Madison and Branford to the east on Shore Line East.

General Dynamics Electric Boat builds submarines in Groton and reports more than 27,000 employees across all its locations6. A Connecticut-only headcount has been reported in the press but is TO VERIFY.

A note on older foundations in the Hartford region
Some homes in north-central and eastern Connecticut have concrete foundations affected by pyrrhotite, a mineral that can cause concrete to crack and deteriorate over time. The state runs a crumbling foundations program with information for owners and buyers12.
If you are buying an older home in the region, ask your inspector and attorney how to evaluate the foundation and what testing is available. Our buying a home in Connecticut guide covers the questions to ask.
New Haven area towns in more detail
New Haven. The city itself has the lowest prices of the towns we track: a $370,000 single-family median and a $246,000 condo median in 202513. Its FY2027 mill rate is 39.9628. Living in the city can mean walking or cycling to Yale and the hospital. Neighborhoods vary a great deal, so visit before choosing. Read the New Haven guide.
Milford. West of New Haven, with its own Metro-North station and beaches. Its 2025 medians were $539,000 for single-family homes and $315,000 for condos14. Milford works for people who split time between New Haven and Stamford or New York. Read the Milford guide.
Branford. East of New Haven on Shore Line East, with 163 condo sales in 2025 at a $310,000 median and a $575,000 single-family median15. Its FY2027 mill rate of 22.16 is the lowest of the New Haven-area towns here8.
Guilford and Madison. Farther east, with town greens, beaches and Shore Line East stations. Prices are higher than Branford’s. Read the Guilford and Madison guide.
Groton and the southeastern shoreline
Groton. Home to Electric Boat, with a 2025 single-family median of $435,000 and a condo median of $267,50016. Its FY2027 mill rate is 25.298. Groton is the most direct choice for a short drive to the shipyard.
The towns around New London, across the Thames River, are also within reach. Shore Line East and Amtrak serve New London’s station5. We plan to add more southeastern towns in a later phase.
Shift times at a large plant often differ from office hours. Drive the route at your real start and end times to see how traffic on the bridges and I-95 affects the trip.
Comparing the three hubs on cost
On cost, the three regions differ more in tax than in price. The Hartford-area towns we track have moderate prices and high mill rates. The New Haven area ranges from the city’s low prices and high rate to Branford’s moderate prices and low rate. Groton combines moderate prices with a mid-range rate.
To compare a specific home price across towns, use the cost of moving calculator. For the full monthly picture, including insurance and utilities, read costs and money and the cost of living guide.
Relocating for a job: a practical sequence
First, confirm your start date and any relocation support from your employer. Then shortlist three to five towns within your commute limit and compare them on price, tax and the kind of place you want to live.
Next, decide whether to rent first. If the job is new, a year of renting near the office lets you learn the area before buying. Larger cities such as New Haven and Hartford have more rental options than small towns.
Finally, when you are ready to buy, line up a lender, an attorney and a local agent. Get matched with one licensed Connecticut agent who works near your new workplace.
Comparing with a New York commute
If you are weighing a Connecticut job against one in New York, compare both sides. The commuting guide, Connecticut vs Westchester and Stamford vs Norwalk pages cover the New York side of the decision.
Life outside work in each region
The Hartford area has a large suburban belt with town centers, parks and the trails of the Farmington Valley. Hartford itself has museums, theaters and sports.
The New Haven area combines a small city with universities, museums and restaurants and a shoreline of beaches and town greens to the east and west.
Southeastern Connecticut has the Thames River, a long coastline and historic towns. It is farther from New York, which some people see as a drawback and others as an advantage.
Spend a weekend in each region you are considering. The feel of daily life away from work is as important as the commute.
Questions to ask your employer
Ask whether the role is fully on-site, hybrid or remote and whether that is likely to change. A hybrid role widens the circle of towns you can consider.
Ask about parking, shift times and any support for transit. Ask whether the company has staff who can tell you about the towns where colleagues live.
Renting near a job hub
If your job is new, renting for the first year near the workplace is a sensible way to learn the area. Hartford, West Hartford and New Haven have the largest rental markets of the towns covered here. Smaller towns such as Guilford, Madison and Simsbury have far fewer rentals.
When you rent, test the commute you would have from the towns you might buy in. A weekend drive from your apartment to each one and a weekday trip at rush hour, will narrow the list quickly.
Keep notes on what you like and dislike about each place. By the time your lease ends, you will know where you want to buy. Our relocating to Connecticut guide covers renting first in more detail, and buying a home in Connecticut covers the purchase.
