FAQ

Moving to Connecticut: Frequently Asked Questions

Short, sourced answers to the questions people ask most about moving to Connecticut, with links to the full guides.

Moving to Connecticut

How long do I have to get a Connecticut driver's license after moving?

The DMV's page for new residents says you have 90 days after establishing residency to transfer an out-of-state license1, and 90 days to transfer your vehicle registration2. One older DMV page still gives 60 days for the license, so confirm with the DMV when you book.

Does Connecticut have a state income tax?

Yes. Connecticut taxes income at graduated rates from 2 percent to 6.99 percent, with brackets that depend on filing status3. See the costs and money guide for how it compares and how retirement income is treated.

What is a mill rate?

A mill is $1 of tax for every $1,000 of assessed value4. Connecticut homes are assessed at 70 percent of market value5, so a $500,000 home in a 25 mill town would owe about $8,750 a year before any credits.

Do Connecticut towns tax cars?

Yes. Towns levy property tax on registered vehicles as well as homes, and state law caps the motor vehicle mill rate at 32.46 mills4.

Commuting

How long is the train from Stamford to Grand Central?

Per Metro-North's published schedule for Tuesday, October 13, 2026, direct morning trains from Stamford to Grand Central were scheduled at 50 to 70 minutes, with a median of 57 minutes. Of the 35 direct trains leaving between 5:00 and 8:59 AM, 28 left after 6:006.

If I live in Connecticut and work in New York, which state taxes my pay?

New York taxes wages earned there, and Connecticut taxes its residents on all income but gives a credit for income tax paid to another state on the same income7. Remote days for a New York employer can still count as New York income under New York's convenience of the employer rule. Ask a tax professional about your case.

Buying a home

Do Connecticut sellers have to disclose problems with the house?

Most sellers of one to four unit homes must give buyers the state's Residential Property Condition Disclosure Report before a contract is signed8. If they do not, the buyer is owed a $500 credit at closing9.

Should I test for radon in Connecticut?

The Department of Public Health says high radon levels can occur in any part of Connecticut and that testing is the only way to know a home's level. The EPA recommends fixing a home at 4 pCi/L or higher10.

What are crumbling foundations?

Some homes in north-central and eastern Connecticut were built with concrete containing the mineral pyrrhotite, which can make foundations deteriorate. The state has programs for affected owners11. Ask about foundation testing when buying in the affected area.

Property tax and closing costs

Why do Norwalk and Stamford show a range of mill rates?

Both cities set different real estate rates for different taxing districts. For FY2027, Norwalk homes pay 22.98 to 24.67 mills, depending on the taxing district and Stamford homes pay 24.31 to 25.14 mills, depending on the tax district. The single figure in the state table is not the rate on a house, so ask the assessor which district an address is in.

What does the tax illustration per $100,000 of assessed value mean?

It is the mill rate turned into dollars for a round number. Connecticut assesses homes at 70 percent of market value at the last revaluation5, so $100,000 of assessed value is roughly $142,857 of market value. In Milford it comes to about $2,867 a year at the FY2027 rate4.

Who pays the conveyance tax when a Connecticut home sells?

The seller. The state conveyance tax on a home is 0.75 percent on the first $800,000 of the price and 1.25 percent from $800,000 to $2.5 million, with a higher tier above that. Towns add their own conveyance tax of 0.25 percent in most places and up to 0.50 percent in some1213.

Is there property tax relief for older homeowners?

The state Circuit Breaker program can reduce the bill for homeowners 65 or older or with a disability who meet the income limits: $46,300 for a single filer and $56,500 for a married couple, with credits of up to $1,000 and $1,25014. Many towns add their own senior programs, so ask the assessor.

Do I owe federal tax when I sell my old home?

Many owners do not. The federal home-sale exclusion can shelter up to $250,000 of gain, or $500,000 for most married couples, if you meet the ownership and use tests15. Ask a tax professional before you sell.

Does Connecticut tax Social Security and pensions?

Connecticut exempts some or all Social Security benefits below set income levels and some or all pension and annuity income below set income levels1617. The rules depend on your adjusted gross income and filing status, so check the current thresholds before you plan around them.

Does Connecticut have an estate tax?

Yes. Connecticut is one of the states with its own estate and gift tax, with an exemption set by the Department of Revenue Services18. Check the current exemption amount with the department or an estate attorney.

Choosing a town

Which Connecticut towns does this site cover?

Stamford, Norwalk, Greenwich, Darien, Westport, Fairfield, Ridgefield, Milford, New Haven, Guilford and Madison, Southbury and West Hartford. Each guide follows the same order: overview, commute, taxes, schools, housing and questions.

Which town has the most trains to Grand Central?

Stamford. On our reference Tuesday, 35 direct morning trains left Stamford for Grand Central between 5:00 and 8:59 AM, with a median ride of 57 minutes6. The station table compares every New Haven Line stop.

Which town on this site has the most rail services?

New Haven. Union Station is served by Metro-North, Amtrak, the CTrail Hartford Line and Shore Line East, so you can ride toward New York, Hartford and Springfield or east along the shore1920.

Where are the lowest home prices among the towns covered?

In 2025, New Haven had the lowest single-family median of the towns on this site at $370,00021. Among the suburbs, Milford ($539,000) and West Hartford ($542,250) were lowest2223.

Which towns have the most condos?

In 2025, Stamford recorded 542 condo and townhouse sales at a median of $445,000 and Norwalk 344 at $412,5002425. Southbury, home to Heritage Village, had 255 at $299,00026.

Can I live on the shoreline and still take a train?

Yes. Milford, Fairfield, Westport, Darien, Norwalk, Stamford and Greenwich all sit on the New Haven Line. East of New Haven, Shore Line East stops in Guilford and Madison and reaches New Haven in about 21 to 30 minutes27.

Is Connecticut a good fit for a remote worker?

Remote workers care less about train times and more about price, space and services. Madison reported that 30 percent of working residents work from home28. The remote work list compares towns on those terms.

Schools

Where can I find official school data for a Connecticut town?

EdSight, the State Department of Education's data portal, publishes enrollment, test results, graduation rates and other measures for every district and school29. Use it alongside the district's own website.

How do the town guides report school results?

Each guide gives the district's enrollment, four-year graduation rate and the share of tested students who met the state standard in math and English, from the town's 2026 profile, next to the state figures of 89, 46 and 50 percent30.

Do you rank school districts?

No. Where a guide quotes a third-party ranking, it names the edition and links to it, and a ranking we could not confirm on the current edition is flagged TO VERIFY. Visit schools and talk to the district before you decide.

Homes, flood risk and inspections

How do I check whether a house is in a flood zone?

Look the address up on FEMA's Flood Map Service Center31. If the home is in a high-risk zone and has a federally backed mortgage, the lender will require flood insurance. The state explains the National Flood Insurance Program32 and how to shop for coverage33.

Should I test the well water?

Yes, if the home has a private well. Connecticut's Department of Public Health recommends regular testing of private wells, and a test before you buy is the time to find a problem34. Ask the inspector or a certified laboratory which tests to order.

What are beach association taxes?

Some shoreline neighborhoods have associations or districts that levy their own tax on top of the town's. The state's mill rate list includes them, for example Sachems Head and Old Quarry in Guilford35. Ask whether an address is in one before you budget.

About this site

Is Live Love Work Connecticut a real estate brokerage?

Live Love Work Connecticut is an information guide. It is not a Connecticut real estate brokerage, it does not represent buyers or sellers and it does not list, show, negotiate or sell property. If you ask for help, we introduce you to a licensed Connecticut real estate agent.

What does it cost to be matched with an agent?

The introduction costs you nothing and you are never obligated to hire anyone. If you later buy or sell with the agent, their brokerage may pay a referral fee, as explained in the disclaimer.

Do you show homes for sale?

No. The site has no listings, MLS search or property alerts. If you want to see homes, a licensed Connecticut agent can set that up after an introduction.

Do you rate towns on safety?

No. We do not rate towns on safety or say who should live where. Crime data is public, and the guides link to official sources so you can read it yourself.

What does To verify mean on a figure?

The figure comes from a third-party publication we cite and link, but we have not yet checked it against the original data. The label with no figure means we could not confirm a source, so we show nothing rather than guess.
