West Hartford's real estate mill rate is the highest of the towns on this site, at 46.77 for FY2027, while cars are taxed at the state cap5. Lower home prices than Fairfield County offset part of that.

FY2027 rates apply to the October 1, 2025 grand list. *An illustration, not a tax bill: each $100,000 of assessed value times the mill rate. Connecticut assesses homes at 70% of market value as of the town's last revaluation (Connecticut General Statutes, Chapter 203 (assessment at 70% and revaluation)), so $100,000 of assessed value is roughly $142,857 of market value at that date. Special taxing districts can add to the rate and a recent sale price is not the town's assessment. Ask the assessor for the actual assessment.

This is the section to read carefully. West Hartford's rate rose from 44.78 in FY2026 to 46.77 in FY2027, the highest among the towns we cover and cars are taxed at 32.46, the state cap5. The top ranking comes with the highest rate on this site.

As an illustration, each $100,000 of assessed value comes to about $4,677 a year at the FY2027 rate. Lower prices offset part of that: the 2025 single-family median was $542,2504. Whether a bill here beats a pricier coastal town depends on the specific homes, so run both through mill rate math.

West Hartford’s history in brief

West Hartford was Hartford’s “West Division”. It was named in 1806 and incorporated from Hartford in May 185429. An early farming area with mills, tanneries and blacksmith shops, it was industrial by the late 19th century and it is the birthplace and childhood home of Noah Webster16. A parish that broke away from the capital is now its best-known suburb.
