Where to Live Near Connecticut's Biggest Employers
Many people move to Connecticut for a job in the state rather than a commute to New York. Here are the main job hubs, who the big employers are and which towns to consider near each.
The short answer
Connecticut has four main job hubs: Stamford and southwest Connecticut (finance and corporate offices), Hartford (insurance, healthcare and state government), New Haven (Yale and Yale New Haven Health, which reported 31,115 employees in FY2024) and Groton (Electric Boat). Choose a town by its drive or train to your workplace, then by budget and taxes.
Key figures
| Yale New Haven Health employees (system-wide) | 31,115 (FY2024; headcount, includes one Rhode Island hospital)1 |
|---|---|
| Electric Boat employees (all locations) | More than 27,0002 |
| Electric Boat employees in Connecticut | TO VERIFY About 16,000 per a Greenwich Time report (Jan 2026); not confirmed by Electric Boat. |
| Stamford Health and Charter headquarters headcounts | TO VERIFY Reported by CT Insider; not checked against the employers' own sources. |
| West Hartford average commute | 18.7 minutes3 |
New York gets most of the attention, but Connecticut has its own job centers and plenty of people relocate here for work in the state. This guide covers the four main hubs, how people get to work in each and which towns they tend to consider.
Connecticut’s job hubs
Stamford and southwest Connecticut. Stamford has a downtown office district, a hospital system and corporate headquarters, and Greenwich and Norwalk add finance and corporate offices. CT Insider reports Stamford Health and Charter Communications’ headquarters among the large employers there4To verify TO VERIFY; we have not checked headcounts against the employers’ own figures, so we do not quote them.
Hartford. The capital is home to insurers including The Hartford and Travelers, plus Aetna, now part of CVS Health, and the region’s hospital systems and state government5. It is a driving region: most people commute by car, with CTtransit and CTfastrak buses6 and the Hartford Line rail service7 as alternatives.
New Haven. Yale University and Yale New Haven Health are the anchors. The health system reported 31,115 employees system-wide in FY2024, a headcount that includes one hospital in Rhode Island1. Union Station connects Metro-North, the Hartford Line and Shore Line East8.
Groton and New London. General Dynamics Electric Boat builds submarines in Groton and reports more than 27,000 employees across all its locations2. A Connecticut-only figure of about 16,000 has been reported in the press, but we could not confirm it with Electric Boat, so it appears here as TO VERIFY.
The CT Department of Labor publishes a list of the state’s largest employers by size band5, along with monthly employment and wage data9.

Getting to work without a car
Connecticut is mostly a driving state, but there are options. The Hartford Line runs between New Haven, Hartford and Springfield7. Shore Line East connects the shoreline towns with New Haven8. CTtransit runs local and express buses in Hartford, New Haven, Stamford and other areas and CTfastrak is a bus rapid transit line between Hartford and New Britain6. The guide to commuting within Connecticut covers these in detail.
Remote and hybrid work
If you will work from home most of the week, your choice widens. Check internet providers for any address before you buy, think about where you will travel for office days and look at towns with space and lower taxes. The best towns for remote work page sets out the criteria.
Before you accept the offer
- Ask whether the role is on site, hybrid or remote and which office.
- Ask about relocation support, temporary housing and the timing of your start date.
- Drive the commute from a shortlisted town at rush hour.
- Read where to live if you work in Hartford, New Haven or Groton for town-by-town commute rings.
When you are ready, we can introduce you to one licensed Connecticut agent who works near your new job.
Matching a town to a job
The simplest way to choose a town for a Connecticut job is to start from the office and draw a commute circle. Decide the longest daily drive or ride you will accept, then look only at towns inside it.
For a Hartford job, that circle includes West Hartford and other nearby towns. For a New Haven job, it includes the city itself and shoreline towns such as Guilford and Madison. For a Stamford job, it includes Stamford, Norwalk, Darien and Greenwich.
Then narrow by budget and the kind of place you want to live. Our where to live section compares the towns on this site.
Reverse commuting from New York
Some people live in New York City and work in Connecticut, especially in Stamford. Metro-North runs trains in both directions and reverse commutes can be less crowded than the inbound trains.
If you will reverse commute for a while before moving, test the trip at your real hours. It will help you decide later whether to move closer or keep the city apartment.
Two jobs, two directions
Households with two workers often have jobs in different places, for example one in Manhattan and one in Hartford or New Haven. The answer is usually a town between the two that has rail for one person and a reasonable drive for the other.
Shoreline towns with Shore Line East service and towns along the Hartford Line, can work for this kind of split. Our commuting within Connecticut guide covers both rail lines.
Remote and hybrid workers
If your job lets you work from home most days, the commute circle can be much larger. You may be able to trade a longer occasional trip for more space or a lower price.
The best towns for remote work list looks at prices, taxes and rail for office days. Check broadband at any address before you buy, using the FCC map10.
Negotiating a relocation
If an employer is moving you to Connecticut, ask what relocation support is offered. Packages can include moving costs, temporary housing, help selling your current home and house-hunting trips.
Ask how the support is taxed. Moving reimbursements can be taxable income for many employees11, so check with your employer and a tax adviser.
Use the cost of moving calculator and the costs and money hub to estimate what the move will cost you, so you know what to ask for.
Comparing offers in different places
If you are weighing jobs in different parts of the state or in Connecticut and New York, compare the full cost of living near each one. Housing and property tax differ more between Connecticut towns than salaries often do.
Our cost of living guide and the Connecticut vs Westchester comparison help with that. For a three-way look at the major job centers, see where to live if you work in Hartford, New Haven or Groton.
When to bring in local help
Once you know where the job is, a local agent can tell you which neighborhoods are an easy drive at rush hour and which are not. Get matched with one licensed Connecticut agent who works near your new office.
Healthcare and university jobs
Hospitals and universities are among the largest employers in the state and their staff often work shifts. If you will work nights or weekends, rush-hour traffic matters less, but late-night transit options matter more.
For a Yale or Yale New Haven Health job, the choice is often between living in New Haven itself and a short drive from the shoreline or nearby suburbs. For a Hartford hospital job, nearby towns such as West Hartford keep the drive short.
Ask your employer about parking at the campus. At a large hospital or university, the walk or shuttle from the employee lot can add real time to each shift.
Defense and manufacturing jobs
Eastern Connecticut’s largest employer is Electric Boat in Groton2. People working there often live in nearby towns along the shoreline or inland and many drive.
Manufacturing and aerospace employers elsewhere in the state are often in suburban or industrial areas without rail. Plan on a car and look at drive times at shift-change hours.
State government and insurance jobs in Hartford
Hartford is the state capital and a long-standing center for the insurance industry. Office jobs there often follow regular hours, which makes rush-hour traffic on the main highways a factor in choosing a town.
Some commuters use CTfastrak buses or the Hartford Line rather than driving downtown. Read commuting within Connecticut for how these services work, then check whether a stop is near both home and office.
Parking downtown can be a monthly cost of its own. Ask your employer whether parking is provided or subsidized before you decide whether to drive or ride.
Building a shortlist from the job outward
Once you know the job, the hours and how you will get there, list five to eight towns that fit. Then compare them on price, taxes and the kind of daily life you want.
Use the cost of living guide and the property tax guide to compare the money side. Use the town pages for everything else. When you have two or three finalists, get matched with a local agent.
Common questions
Who are the largest employers in Connecticut?
Is Hartford still the insurance capital?
