Best Connecticut Towns for NYC Commuters: Ranked by Train Time, Frequency and Cost
Instead of one ranking, we group towns into commute bands so you can see the trade-off between time on the train and what you pay for a home.
The short answer
Greenwich (median 51.5 minutes) and Stamford (57) are the only Connecticut stations in the under-60 band and Stamford has by far the most direct morning trains (28 leaving 6:00 to 8:59 AM). Darien, Norwalk, New Canaan and Westport fall in the 60 to 75 minute band. Fairfield is 75 to 90. Milford and Ridgefield trade a longer ride for lower prices or more space.

Under 60 minutes
Greenwich has the fastest ride in Connecticut, from Greenwich station or the local stops at Cos Cob, Riverside and Old Greenwich. It also has one of the lowest mill rates in the state. Prices are the highest on this list, and the SmartMLS figures cover Greenwich only partly. Greenwich guide.
Stamford has the most direct morning trains of any Connecticut station we checked, plus a large condo market, which makes it the most practical choice for a daily commute at a lower entry price. Stamford guide.

Town by town: the details behind the bands
Greenwich. Greenwich station’s direct trains took 44 to 60 minutes, with a median of 51.5, and 17 left between 6:00 and 8:59 AM3. Cos Cob, Riverside and Old Greenwich each had 10 in that window. Four stations spread the demand across town. See Greenwich vs Darien.
Stamford. Direct trains took 50 to 70 minutes, with a median of 57, and 28 left between 6:00 and 8:593. That frequency is Stamford’s biggest advantage: a missed train is rarely a disaster. Glenbrook and Springdale on the New Canaan Branch serve neighborhoods north of downtown.
Darien. Noroton Heights’ direct trains took 58 to 63 minutes and Darien station’s 61 to 713. Darien had 9 direct trains in the 6:00 to 8:59 window and Noroton Heights 7. Parking is the main constraint, with permit waitlists at both5.
Norwalk. South Norwalk’s direct trains took 61 to 77 minutes, with a median of 69.5, and 16 left between 6:00 and 8:59. Rowayton’s took 64 to 70, with 7 in the window3. See Stamford vs Norwalk.
New Canaan. Five direct trains in the morning window, taking 68 to 73 minutes3. Other trips change at Stamford. The commute alternatives guide covers the branch.
Westport. Westport station’s direct trains took 68 to 85 minutes, with a median of 74; Green’s Farms had a median of 803. See Westport vs Fairfield.
Fairfield. Fairfield station’s direct trains took 75 to 95 minutes, with a median of 85, and 13 left between 6:00 and 8:59. Southport’s median was 83 and Fairfield-Black Rock’s 883.
Milford. Direct trains took 97 to 117 minutes, with a median of 105, and 10 left between 6:00 and 8:593. See the Milford guide.
Ridgefield. Branchville’s direct trains took 93 to 101 minutes3. Katonah, a drive away on the Harlem Line, took 67 to 74. See the Ridgefield guide.
What the time adds up to
A commute’s real cost is measured in hours. At the median, a round trip from Greenwich station takes about 103 minutes on the train. From Stamford, about 114. From South Norwalk, about 139. From Westport, about 148. From Fairfield, about 170. From Milford, about 210.
Those figures exclude the trip to the station and from Grand Central to your office. Add both before you compare.
The difference between Stamford and Milford is about an hour and a half a day on the train. Commuting five days a week, that is more than seven hours a week. Commuting two days a week, it is about three hours. That is why the bands farther out suit hybrid schedules best.
Property tax at each town’s median
The mill rate table above shows the rates. Applied to each town’s 2025 single-family median, the FY2027 rates give these yearly bills4:
- Milford: about $10,817 on a $539,000 median6.
- Fairfield: about $14,407 on $1,072,5007.
- Norwalk: about $12,339 to $13,246, depending on the taxing district on $767,0008.
- Greenwich: about $17,750 on $2,504,4759.
- Stamford: about $16,345 to $16,903, depending on the tax district on $960,50010.
- Westport: about $21,252 on $2,300,00011.
- Ridgefield: about $21,837 on $1,100,00012.
- Darien: about $26,964 on $2,400,00013.
- New Canaan: about $30,880 on $2,600,00014.
Notice that the fastest town, Greenwich, has a mid-range bill thanks to its low rate, while Ridgefield, one of the slowest commutes, has a higher bill than Westport or Fairfield. Stamford and Norwalk show a range because each city taxes real estate at a different rate in each district.
Condos as the commuter’s entry point
For many commuters, a condo near the station is the most practical first home. Here is the yearly tax at each town’s 2025 condo median, at FY2027 rates4:
- Greenwich: about $6,262 on $883,500.
- Milford: about $6,322 on $315,000.
- Ridgefield: about $8,239 on $415,000.
- Fairfield: about $8,530 on $635,000.
- Stamford: about $7,573 to $7,831, depending on the tax district on $445,000.
- Norwalk: about $6,636 to $7,124, depending on the taxing district on $412,500.
- Darien: about $12,134 on $1,080,000.
- Westport: about $12,289 on $1,330,000.
- New Canaan: about $16,271 on $1,370,000.
Stamford and Norwalk combine large condo markets with frequent trains, which is why so many first-time commuters start there108.
If you go in two or three days a week
A hybrid schedule changes the math. The extra time from a farther town is paid only on office days, while the lower price and taxes are paid every month.
For hybrid commuters, the 75 to 90 minute band and beyond deserves a close look. Fairfield and Milford offer more house for the money and frequent enough service for a few days a week. Check the trains at the times you would actually travel.
If your employer might ask for more office days later, test the commute you would have at five days a week before you buy.
The trip home
Morning schedules get most of the attention, but the evening trip matters just as much. Before you choose, check the evening departures from Grand Central to your station, especially if you sometimes work late15.
Main-line hubs such as Stamford have frequent evening service. Branch stations have fewer trains and a missed connection can mean a long wait.
Questions to ask before you choose
How many days a week will you commute and at what time? Which station would you use and can you walk to it? If not, is there a parking permit waitlist? What is the total door-to-door time, not just the train?
For more, read the Metro-North parking guide, the cost of moving calculator and the costs and money hub. When you are ready, get matched with a licensed Connecticut agent who knows the commuter towns.
Renting near the station first
If you are moving from New York and are not sure which band suits you, rent near a station in Stamford or Norwalk for a year. Both have large rental markets close to the platform.
Ride to work from there, then visit the towns in the other bands on weekends. By the end of the lease, you will know how much commute time you are willing to trade for space and price.
How to use this list
Pick the band that fits your office schedule first, then compare price and taxes within it. Before you commit, check station parking for the specific station, ride the train at your real commute time and read commuting to NYC from Connecticut, Metro-North parking, passes and fares and Connecticut vs Westchester.
