Commuting
Other Ways to Commute from Connecticut to NYC: Branch Lines, the Harlem Line, Amtrak and Driving
When the main line is not the best fit: the branches, Harlem Line stations across the border, Amtrak and the car, with scheduled times from Metro-North's data.
The short answer
The branches run few direct trains: five from New Canaan between 5:00 and 8:59 AM (68 to 73 minutes) and four from Branchville (93 to 101 minutes) on Metro-North's published schedule. Ridgefield commuters can drive to Katonah on the Harlem Line, where direct trains took 67 to 74 minutes. Amtrak and driving work for some trips but rarely for a daily commute.
The New Haven Line main line is the standard Connecticut commute, but it is not the only way in. This guide covers the three branches, the Harlem Line stations just over the New York border, Amtrak and driving. Train times are scheduled station to Grand Central times for direct trains leaving between 5:00 and 8:59 AM on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, from Metro-North’s published schedule data1.
The New Canaan Branch
The branch leaves the main line at Stamford and serves Glenbrook and Springdale in Stamford, Talmadge Hill and New Canaan. Some trains run direct to Grand Central; others need a change at Stamford1.
| Station | Line | Scheduled ride | Median | Direct trains 5 to 9 AM | Of which 6 to 9 AM |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Glenbrook | New Canaan Branch | 56 to 62 min | 58 min | 5 | 4 |
| Springdale | New Canaan Branch | 60 to 65 min | 62 min | 5 | 4 |
| Talmadge Hill | New Canaan Branch | 64 to 69 min | 66 min | 5 | 4 |
| New Canaan | New Canaan Branch | 68 to 73 min | 70 min | 5 | 4 |

The Danbury Branch
The Danbury Branch joins the main line at South Norwalk and serves Merritt 7, Wilton, Cannondale, Branchville (the station for Ridgefield), Redding, Bethel and Danbury. Only a handful of morning trains run direct to Grand Central; most trips change at South Norwalk1.
| Station | Line | Scheduled ride | Median | Direct trains 5 to 9 AM | Of which 6 to 9 AM |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Merritt 7 | Danbury Branch | 76 to 84 min | 82.5 min | 4 | 4 |

The Waterbury Branch
The Waterbury Branch connects with the main line at Bridgeport. On the schedule we analyzed, no Waterbury Branch train ran direct to Grand Central in the morning window, so every trip involves a transfer1. It suits occasional trips more than a daily Manhattan commute.
The Harlem Line from western Connecticut
Some commuters in Ridgefield and nearby towns drive across the border to a Harlem Line station in New York. Katonah is the usual example1:
| Station | Line | Scheduled ride | Median | Direct trains 5 to 9 AM | Of which 6 to 9 AM |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Katonah | Harlem Line | 67 to 74 min | 70 min | 10 | 7 |

Add the drive and parking, which vary by route and season. Check parking rules at the New York station before you rely on it. The Ridgefield guide compares the two options.
Amtrak
Amtrak’s Northeast Regional and Acela trains stop at Stamford and New Haven and run to Penn Station2. That can suit people who work near Penn Station or who travel occasionally. For a daily commute, compare Amtrak’s fares and schedule with Metro-North’s for your trip.
Driving
I-95 and the Merritt Parkway (Route 15) are the two main routes from Fairfield County toward New York. The Merritt does not allow trucks or commercial vehicles and has lower bridges and narrower lanes. Both are congested at rush hour and you will also pay for Manhattan parking and any tolls on your route. Driving works best for occasional trips or for jobs in Westchester.
Express buses and shuttles
Some employers and private operators run commuter buses or shuttles from Connecticut. We have not verified a current service to list here, so check with your employer.
How the branches compare with the main line
Numbers make the trade-offs clearer. These are scheduled times to Grand Central for direct trains leaving between 5:00 and 8:59 AM on the schedule we analyzed1.
- Greenwich on the main line: fastest 44 minutes, median 51.5.
- Stamford on the main line: fastest 50 minutes, median 57, with 35 direct trains in the window.
- South Norwalk on the main line: fastest 61 minutes, median 69.5.
- New Canaan at the end of its branch: 68 to 73 minutes, with a median of 70, on five direct trains.
- Westport on the main line: fastest 68 minutes, median 74.
- Branchville on the Danbury Branch: 93 to 101 minutes on four direct trains.
New Canaan’s direct trains are competitive with Westport’s main-line trains in time. The catch is the number: with five direct trains in the morning window, you need one of them to fit your day or you change at Stamford.
Branchville’s direct trains take more than an hour and a half. That is why many Ridgefield commuters look at Katonah or at driving to a main-line station. See the commute times table for every station we cover.
Making a transfer work
On the branches, a change of trains is often part of the trip. The transfer at Stamford or South Norwalk is usually across a platform, but the wait varies with the schedule.
Before you choose a home on a branch, look at the full trip for the trains you would actually take, including the transfer. Metro-North’s trip planner and app show connections and total times3.
Think about the evening trip too. Fewer trains run on the branches at off-peak times, so a late meeting can mean a long wait for a connection.
Some branch commuters drive to the main-line station instead. That shortens the train ride but adds driving and parking. The parking question is covered in our guide to Metro-North parking and fares.
The Harlem Line in more detail
The Harlem Line runs north from Grand Central through Westchester. For western Connecticut, the stations that matter most are those within a reasonable drive of the border.
Katonah is the usual choice for Ridgefield. On the schedule we analyzed, direct trains from Katonah took 67 to 74 minutes, with a median of 701. That is far quicker than the direct trains from Branchville, at the cost of a drive across the state line.
Farther south, White Plains is a major Harlem Line stop, with direct trains taking 38 to 58 minutes and a median of 411. It is more useful for people who live in Westchester or work there than for a daily drive from Connecticut.
Parking at New York stations is run by the local municipalities and rules for non-residents vary. Check availability and price with the station’s operator before you rely on a space.
Living on the New York side instead
Some people weighing a Connecticut branch town also look at towns along the Harlem Line or the New Haven Line in Westchester. Rye, for example, had direct trains of 40 to 52 minutes and Port Chester 43 to 551.
The commute is shorter, but taxes and prices differ. Our Connecticut vs Westchester comparison sets the two side by side, including the tax side covered in live in Connecticut, work in New York.
Working near Penn Station
Metro-North’s New Haven Line trains run to Grand Central. If your office is on the West Side, add the trip across town to every commute.
Amtrak serves Penn Station from Stamford and New Haven2. Its fares are generally higher than Metro-North’s for the same trip, so it suits occasional use more than a daily commute. Check both fares for your schedule4.
The MTA’s Penn Station Access project will run New Haven Line trains to Penn Station over Amtrak’s Hell Gate Line, with four new stations in the East Bronx. In its October 2025 report, the MTA forecast completion in March 2030, three years later than the original March 2027 date. It said that forecast depends on Amtrak providing track access and staff5To verify. Check the MTA’s current announcements before you count on it.
Hybrid schedules change the math
If you go to the office two or three days a week, a longer commute may be acceptable in exchange for a lower price, a larger home or a quieter town. Many commuters on the branches and the far end of the New Haven Line make this trade.
Run the numbers both ways: the monthly cost of tickets and parking for the days you would ride and the time. A ten-trip or single-ride ticket may cost less than a monthly pass for a hybrid schedule4.
Remember that hybrid policies can change. If your employer asked for more days in the office, would the commute still work?
Driving to the city
Driving into Manhattan every day is uncommon from Connecticut. Rush-hour traffic, tolls and the cost of parking in the city usually make the train the better choice. Price the tolls on your route and the monthly rate at your garage before you compare driving with the train.
Driving makes more sense for jobs in Westchester or southern Connecticut or for people who need a car during the day. For those commutes, see our guide to commuting within Connecticut.
Testing a commute before you buy
Before you commit to a town, ride the commute at the time you would actually travel, on a normal weekday. Include the drive or walk to the station, parking and the transfer if there is one.
Try the evening return too, especially if you work late. A commute that looks fine on paper can feel very different at the end of a long day.
If you are renting first, live with the commute for a few months. That is the best test of all.
Which option for which town
- Ridgefield: compare Branchville with the drive to Katonah.
- New Canaan: use a direct train when one fits; otherwise change at Stamford or drive to Stamford for express trains.
- Wilton and Redding: the Danbury Branch for occasional trips or a drive to South Norwalk or Stamford.
- Shelton and the Naugatuck Valley: the Waterbury Branch for occasional trips or a drive to a main-line station.
See the commuting guide for main-line stations and the best towns for NYC commuters for a shortlist. For main-line towns compared head to head, read Stamford vs Norwalk and Westport vs Fairfield, and the town guides for Stamford, Norwalk, Westport, Darien and Greenwich.
When you add up the costs of each option, the costs and money page and the cost of moving calculator help you compare towns on a full monthly budget. When you have a shortlist, get matched with a licensed Connecticut agent who knows the commute from those towns.
Weekend and evening trips
Even if you do not commute daily, think about how often you will go into the city for evenings and weekends. Branch lines run fewer trains at those times than the main line3.
If trips to the city for shows, dinners or visits matter to you, a main-line station within a short drive makes them much easier. Compare towns like Fairfield and Ridgefield with that in mind.
Common questions
Is the Danbury Branch good for daily commuting?
It is workable but slow for Manhattan. On the schedule we analyzed, Branchville had four direct trains to Grand Central between 5:00 and 8:59 AM, taking 93 to 101 minutes; most other trips change at South Norwalk1.
Do Danbury Branch trains go direct to Grand Central?
A few do in the morning peak; most branch trains connect with main-line trains at South Norwalk1. Check the specific train on the MTA trip planner.
Is it faster to drive from Ridgefield to Katonah?
The train from Katonah took 67 to 74 minutes on direct morning trains1, faster than Branchville's 93 to 101. Add the drive to Katonah and parking, which we have not measured, before you compare.
Can I take Amtrak from Stamford to New York every day?
Amtrak runs Northeast Regional and Acela trains from Stamford and New Haven to Penn Station2. It can work for occasional trips, but check fares and schedules for a daily commute.
Which is faster, I-95 or the Merritt?
It depends on the time and traffic. The Merritt Parkway does not allow trucks and commercial vehicles, which can make it calmer, but both roads are congested at rush hour. Use a live traffic app for your trip.
